According to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPS), more than 236,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on young women between the ages of 5 - 19. These surgeries range from rhinoplasty (nose job) to lip fillers. Handfuls of these surgeries can be performed on children as young as 5 - 6 years old. I started this social justice project struggling with my idea. I was unsure what social justice meant to me, I began to really think about what I found wrong with society. I ended up with a concrete idea with a strong narrative that I am proud to be telling. My social justice issue is about how young women view their beauty and how society has conditioned them to want to change it. I am addressing the media and how they view body modifications in young women as the norm.
